Sell books from a bookshop online

    Objective

A bookshop wants to publish all the books it has in stock on its website. Customers can buy them directly online, or pick them up in-store.

Bookstores use specialized cash register software to manage their day-to-day business: supplier orders, payment and payment terminal management, customer database management, and so on.

This type of software uses its API to retrieve the references of books available in the bookshop, information on each book from a bibliographic database (cover photo, title, summary, author, etc.), price and stock.

    Related issues

Professional databases contain detailed technical information (ISBN, distributor, discounts) that must be filtered and adapted for public display.

The large volume of references (sometimes several tens of thousands) can cause performance issues in WordPress, which is not inherently optimized to handle synchronization of such data volumes.

Managing book-specific metadata (author, publisher, collection, year) requires a suitable taxonomy structure within WordPress.

Availability and stock information must be updated frequently to avoid customer frustration.

Cover images present a particular challenge, as they must be retrieved from various sources (industry software, bibliographic databases) and then optimized for the web.

Selecting which books to publish requires precise criteria (new releases, promotions, themes) and appropriate filtering mechanisms.

Integration with external bibliographic repositories (Dilicom, Electre) adds complexity to the process but significantly enriches the data.

    Case studies

A Paris-based bookseller chose to build her website using WordPress.

The WooCommerce plugin quickly turned the site into a fully functional online store.

Books available in the physical shop are automatically published on the website.

Customers can purchase a book online and then pick it up in-store — a real advantage for regulars!

Purchases are sent directly to the POS system, and sold books are automatically removed from inventory.
